October

Happy Thanksgiving!

Our grade 3/4 class is well underway in all subject areas.

Math: We have been learning about Numbers. We have covered skip counting, place value, ordering and estimating numbers, addition with and without regrouping. We have begun to review subtraction. Subtraction with regrouping is a tricky strand in mathematics, and it is a subject we will begin this coming week. Grade 3 and grade 4 students have been learning all of the above up to 1,000 and 10,000 respectively.

Language Arts: Wow! We have covered a lot in LA already. Students have been learning all about Narrative Writing, and how to grab the readers attention when they write their own stories. We have covered Entertaining Beginnings and are now learning all about Elaborative Detail. Students have also been practicing their writing skills during our Daily 5 activities, proof-reading activities and during journal writing. They spend time reading during Daily 5, DEAR and throughout the day during other subjects. Ms. Powell has been working on a novel Study with our class, reading them "The Witches" by Rohl Dahl, just in time for Halloween!

Science: Grade 3 students have been learning all about Hearing and Sound, while the Grade 4 students have been focusing on Shadows and Light. We have completed one experiment in each grade to enhance learning. I am excited to be planning a couple more experiments before we move onto our next topics in Science.

Social Studies: Grade 3 students have been learning about the Environment and Geography of Ukraine, Tunisia, Peru and India. Grade 4 students have been learning all about places in Alberta, specifically the geography and land of our geographically-diverse province.

Religion: During the month of September, we focused on learning about the Rosary. Our district theme is "Ask, and it will be given you" - Matthew 7:7. It was also the theme of our opening liturgy, which our class had the privilege of hosting, along side of the grade 7 students. Students learned about the importance of asking God for non-material gifts and the importance of prayer. We have now moved on to learning what it means to be holy, which will be our religion topic for the rest of October.

Health: In health class, we have been focusing on different ways that we can be healthy including; protecting ourselves from extreme weather, being safe in the sun, being physically active and ways that we can use technology to be healthy. We are moving into learning about how to eat properly to maintain optimum health.

Music: During Music class, we have been learning about rhythm and beat. Students attend Hymn Sing with the rest of the elementary community to further enhance their music education.

Phys. Ed: Mr. Tran and Mr. Christiensen have been working with the students both indoors and out to increase their physical ability and stamina.

French: Grade 4 students attend French class in Mr. Silva's class.

Art: Mrs. Teichroeb teaches our class Art 2 periods in a 6-day cycle. We welcomed Mrs. Lecuyer into our class this past week. She taught our class all about drawing and coloring realistic fruits and vegetables to put onto our cornucopia posted outside of our classroom.

Many parents have asked for practice work for students to complete at home. The following are fantastic websites where children can practice their skills:

- BrainPop.com - kids.nationalgeographic.com
- PBSKids.org - ABCYa.com
- SumDog.com - Starfall.com
- FunBrain.com - Prodigy?
- Storylineonline.net - Mathgametime.com

As always, if you have any comments, questions or concerns, the best way to contact me is through your child's agenda. For longer messages or to arrange a meeting, please email me at Kathryn.korbaylo@cssd.ab.ca.

Yours in Learning,

Mrs. Korbaylo
